To address the publisher’s concerns, multiple actions were put in place:
- Hired a combination of postgraduates and PhD holders from the respective disciplines, who were then deployed to carry out journal editorial office services.
- A tech-driven module was introduced in the workflow to carry out preflight checks instantly. This module assisted in reducing the unnecessary unsubmissions and in ensuring the admin checks were carried out swiftly.

Challenge
Enhancing the efficiency of the reviewer selection process so that editorial productivity and quality are improved.
Objective
Improving reviewer selection procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and the peer review process itself.
Solution
Amnet studied the underlying concerns that were resulting in the client’s challenges and introduced the following changes:
- Diversification in the reviewer selection process, which ensured a higher response rate from reviewers.
- Team was trained to select the correct keywords/strings, which helped to identify the best reviewers.
- Enhanced the curated list of the reviewer database. Furthermore, encouraged the team to search for reviewers using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science.
- Also, we worked on expanding the targeted group of reviewers (viz., early-career researchers or experienced researchers).
Benefits
Acceptance rate by reviewers increased from 6% to 10%. This had a direct effect on the impact factor of the journals. This further led to an increase in the submission count of the journals.

Case Study 3: Ethical Issues: Research Integrity
Client: A leading publisher of medical journals
Challenge
The client identified the formation of a peer review ring, accompanied by a surge in submissions from a specific region, threatening the credibility of the journal. The client also noticed manipulated images that were impacting the publisher’s image.
Objective
Enhancing integrity in the review process of journals to uphold the journals’ reputation in the face of unethical practices.
Solution
- Amnet deployed subject matter experts to pick up any conflict of interest at the beginning of the submission stage itself, before assigning the manuscripts to the editors/reviewers.
- To overcome the surge in submissions from a specific author, we implemented specific measures, like restricting the author to submitting a maximum of seven articles within a defined timescale. This ensured that the author would be unable to submit more than seven articles until at least one of them was accepted.
- Amnet used a combination of tools and manual checks to identify image manipulation. The images were run through these tools, which generated a report that was further reviewed by image-checking specialists to identify any manipulation and then report the same to the publisher.
Benefits
Aging of the manuscripts, from submission to acceptance, improved, as rejections due to COI were avoided, or manipulations in any form were picked up well in advance.
